[Thanksgiving] Word Collage

Remember the shelves I put up for Halloween? Well, now that it's not a bar area for the Halloween party, I decked it out for Thanksgiving. But it was missing something! Cricut Word Collage to the rescue!
Not too shabby

Step 1: Paint the canvas orange. FYI: don't bother with the bowls, just pour the paint on the canvas. I think it took about 3 coats?

Step 2: measure and cut out vinyl Thanksgiving from Cricut Word Collage cartridge. I used brown. Tips I learned: get all the bubbles out beforehand of the vinyl, otherwise, some of the letters might start to come up too soon.

Step 3: Peel the negative off the backing, BUT NOT THE LETTERS. This was a lot of vinyl, so I was taking it off in pieces and cutting away what I'd already gone through. Still, I lost about 3-4 letters in the process. I's were the hardest. Also, the negative includes parts like the inside of an A. I found that the tool from the cricut tool kit that looks like a dentist's pick worked best for this.

Step 4: put a layer of transfer tape over the letters. I have off brand transfer tape, so I'm not sure if what I found out is relevant to provocraft. But, I found that I needed to run something flat (I used the ruler looking thing in the cricut tool kit) over it to press the transfer tape good into the letters. Then I peeled slowly back to make sure I got it all.

Step 5: place transfer taped letters onto the canvas. Again, I rubbed the tape with something flat. Now peel off the transfer tape. SLOWLY. I also put some force down right below where I was peeling to push down the letters.

On the shelf!

  1. I just got this cartridge and I've been looking for ways to use it. Thanks for the idea! I also found your tweets about SDCC intriguing. I didn't expect to find Cricut and tweets about John Barrowman ogling guys on the same blog--and I mean that in the best possible way!

  2. I tried this and my vinyl won't stick. Is there a certain kind of vinyl you have to use?

    1. I think it was vinyl I got from a local seller but they don't exist anymore. I don't remember the specifics. Sorry I can't be of more help on this. :(

  3. Do you all know of any way possible to "re-cut" only certain words of the collage? I lost a few letters in the process! :(

    1. It's been a while, but if you are using the web app or a gypsy, you can ungroup the image and delete the portions you don't want.

  4. so craftroom has that option?

    1. Like I said, it's been a while since I've used it but when I did, craftroom pretty much looked like a clone of a gypsy. So it should. I know I was able to pull shapes in all sorts of directions to make new shapes.

I can't imagine it not having the ability to ungroup and delete.

  5. well if by ungroup you mean "to box it and drag," it won't do that. I already tried. :(

    1. That's not what I mean. There should be a button that says "Ungroup" next to one that says "group". Once you click ungroup, it separates each pieces into an individual piece. Then when you drag it, it only drags that piece instead of the whole image. Similarly you can resize only that piece. It should also let you delete the pieces you don't want.

That might help. In this, it's at the top of cricut craft room. I'm not sure if that is where they still are because it's been about a year since I've used my Cricut. There was a forum post I found that said some cartridges won't let you ungroup in craft room. But since my are all connected to my gypsy and last I used it you couldn't connect to both, that's the extent of my knowledge.

  6. I do see now what you are talking about, but the reason I hadn't noticed it before is that it isn't clickable on mine. :( Thanks for your help though!
